WEGDR Adoption Process

  • Fill out our application! – easy electronic application **PLEASE SEE ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS BELOW BEFORE APPLYING**

  • Phone Interview- our adoption coordinator will give you a call after processing your application. This does not happen 5 minutes after you submit your app! Please be patient and give us time to sort thru the many, many applications we receive.

  • Home visit- A volunteer will come to your home to visit with you and discuss the care of Great Danes. The volunteer will also look for any potential problems and check to be sure that your fencing is secure. Your home visit does not mean you have been approved

  • Approval - After the above steps have been completed all your information will be reviewed and a decision will be made about adoption. If at this point you are approved to adopt, WEGDR will help guide you to the appropriate dog for your family

  • Meet & Greet- after discussing which Danes would make the perfect fit for your family and lifestyle we will set up a day for you to meet them!

  • Adoption & Contract - For the protection of the Great Danes we place, everyone that adopts a Great Dane from WEGDR will be required to sign an adoption contract.

*****THE ADOPTION PROCESS TAKES TIME! CALLING/EMAILING/MESSAGING TO ASK IF WE ARE WORKING ON YOUR ADOPTION ONLY SLOWS US DOWN FOR YOU AND EVERY OTHER ADOPTER. WE WILL CONTACT YOU AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! WE PROMISE!*****

Please also note- we will not hold a dog available for adoption for you. Many times multiple approved adopters are interested in the same dog, and they may all be a great match for the families. It is in the best interest of the dog to spend as little time in rescue as possible. If you are not ready to adopt immediately after you adoption approval, please do not set your heart on a particular dog. The first available, best matched family will be allowed to adopt.

Adoption Requirements

To adopt a dog, WEGDR has a few simple requirements (please read carefully):

  • The Dane must be an inside dog and not spend a lot of time outside unsupervised

  • The family should have a fenced in yard

    • SOMETIMES exceptions are made about fencing requirements with certain dogs we feel would do well without fencing.

  • All animals in the household must be spayed/neutered

  • All animals in the household must see a vet once a year

  • All animals in the household must be on heartworm & flea preventatives

  • Applicant must be 25 or older

  • The family (plus any current dogs) must be willing to travel to meet the new Dane (we do adopt to out of state residents but we do NOT provide transports. You must travel to SC to adopt from WEGDR)

  • The family must be committed to the care and well-being of the dog

  • Children & their ages of adoptive families are judged on a case by case basis depending on the dog. Some dogs do great with kids while others do not. The age requirement we make for each dog is made for both the well being of the dog as well as your kids. We require kids to be 6 or older for puppy adoptions.

  • All Great Dane adopters must purchase and bring BLOAT BUSTER to their meet & greet/adoption day. Bloat buster can be purchased online from Nature's Farmacy.

PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT MAKE EXCEPTIONS TO ANY OF THE ABOVE FOR PUPPY ADOPTIONS. WE ALSO DO NOT ADOPT LITTERMATES OUT TOGETHER.
